The skill of saying 'No' - Uncovered.

Image
Do you feel like you're in an endless struggle of egos with your little one, that you're not getting the right response from them, that you keep losing your cool and lashing out or just giving in to their demands, and that your relationship with them is best described as one filled with conflicts and confrontations? If most of your interaction with your child is negative and disciplinary, your connection with them may suffer. Overusing the word 'No' might take you down this road. "No" is a powerful word that is easy to utter and quick on the lips. Your child will frequently hear you use this term, and you will listen to it from your child. A parent must learn to say "no" to a kid so the youngster can subsequently say "no" to himself. Delaying gratification is difficult for all children and some adults. "I want it now,", especially in toddlers, is a motivating need. Accepting "no" from others is a prerequisite...

A new chapter - Bhuj (Part 1)

Vacations are  mainly to relax and get away from the rut. We travel to see and try new things and experience a different way  of living . Vacationing in Bhuj was really fun and was always a sought-after break.   But waking up to the reality of spending our entire life in Bhuj, was something which we had never thought of. Leaving a land of dreams, aspirations, good quality life, opportunities and much more, had indeed brought our lives to a standstill. We, literally had no idea as to what we would do in this small, desolate and traditional town. The worst part was that we couldn't even raise our voices against such a decision as we had no say nor were we asked.  A verdict had been passed and we were supposed to adhere to it. There is a turning point in everyone's life, because every journey has it's end.  The  turning point,  in the process of growing up is, when you discover the core of strength within you that survives all hurt. It's al...

Vacations at Bhuj - 3

The most beautiful things are not associated with money; they are  memories  and moments.  Also one of the   best  ways to make yourself happy in the present is to recall happy times from the past.  My   memories  mean a lot to me, and I hold them close to my heart. The   memories   we make with our family, is everything. My Dada's home was a huge two-storeyed bungalow with a garden. It was situated on the main road. It had a Gulmohar tree, a Moringa (drumsticks) tree and some shrubs. It was named using the first few letters of their names. The house had many huge rooms and a lovely terrace. The main attraction of the hall was it's large swing, which we called 'Hichko'. The hichko was placed in such a way that a huge window opened in front of it. A person sitting on the hichko could spend hours and hours watching the world go by through the window. And my dadi or my dada would be found swinging on it passing leisurely ...

Vacations at Bhuj - 2

Vacation was like an intermission in our fast-paced routine. For us, too, it  was a huge break and a change from Mumbai.  How much patience it must have been needed to blend in a social circle which seemed alien to us. The main reason being, our limited knowledge of our mother tongue - Gujarati.   Being educated in a convent school, and living in the cosmopolitan culture of Mumbai, our language was heavily influenced by English and Hindi. Many a times we were ridiculed for our choice of words and sometimes we were considered arrogant or haughty for the restricted use of the language. Till date, English or Hindi speaking people are treated differently. Well, well, nothing can be done about it. Anyways, going down the memory lane, my sphere of influence involves many people. Most important of them are my grandparents. I feel that a person has to be very lucky to be able to spend quality time with elders. I was one such lucky person, who has soaked up and rev...

Vacations at my native place - 1

Vacations are such a great time to indulge in simple pleasures of life.  During our school or college routine days,  we kind of leave everything aside in the pursuit of catching up with the various pressures  of academics and related activities. We had shifted to Mumbai very early due to dad's job. I was 3 months old at that time. My mom and dad have worked very hard to make the ends meet. They have tried their level best to give us the best days  of our lives and happy memories. You are already reading about it, right? After a gruelling session at school, we used to visit our native place during vacations. My Native place  - Bhuj Kutch. The journey to Bhuj and the excitement attached to it is something which I will never forget. We used to reach Bombay Central station by taxi.  Why taxi?  Because we had a lot of luggage with us, carrying small tit bits for everyone in the family. Then we used to rush into the junction to catch our train...

Life in Mumbai - Part 5

So, keeping track with  the fun, spending long hours @ Juhu Beach was something we always looked forward to.  Though it was quite a distance from our home, we liked the journey both ways. That is, going by train and riding back on the Mumbai famous double-decker bus. We used to try our best to find a place on the upper deck and that too in the front. The feeling of sitting there would be like a bird flying through the streets filled with lights, sounds and traffic. Okay, now, how can we forget the binge eating on the beach.  It was always difficult to choose between so many varieties of food items available.  But finally we would lay our hands on our all time favourite, Bhelpuri, Pavbhaji, Ragda patties and Ice gold. Hey hold on, I  hope you're not thinking that we had all of these at one go. I meant that we had different choices at different times.  Essel World.  Yes, the biggest amusement park in India, after Delhi's Appu Ghar, started with a big ...

Life in Mumbai - part 4

OMG!😱 The rains @Vadodara. Terrible. The floods and a chaotic situation everywhere. But finally the worst is over and we, the Barodians are slowly getting back to our normal lives.  Yes, so my school and college life, both were quite exciting for me. Especially during college days, I came to know some highlights of my own character and nature. I was a free spirit or you can say independent.πŸ’ƒ I was amazed at myself for being able to handle many things on my own like getting a railway pass after standing in long queues, to reach home or college in torrents of rain by whatever means of transport available, shopping, bargaining and many more such tasks. Especially when I was considered as a very low in confidence and a good little girl who was out on her own in this big bad world. Another most difficult thing for me was to get through a eunuch. I used to get afraid of them. Also I had a belief that whatever they would say in the form of good wishes or curses would be likely to com...

Life in Mumbai - part 3

Hi, I'm back. πŸ˜€ Back to Mumbai then. One of the many things that I would like to talk about is that my dad had introduced us to viewing English movies. His intention was to improve our vocabulary and fluency of the language. And the 2 best theaters that we visited were Eros and Regal cinema in Churchgate. It was fun and a sense of exuberance filled us when we shared our experiences, on the next day, with our friends. Akbarally's was the  best shopping place in Churchgate. We would spend hours looking at the awesome things like dresses, make up kits, watches and so many things that I wished I would have bought from there. We did buy only a few of them to show off to our friends,  but they were very costly.  One thing that I realised having @ Akbarally's was a soft and delicious Swiss cake roll. Whether we would buy anything from the store or not, having my favourite Swiss cake was mandatory. Those who have seen me, now you know why I'm on a heavier side. 😜 I...

Life in Mumbai - part 2

There is much more to Mumbai than my education.  Reading, travelling, enjoying food and having fun. Come Sunday morning and we looked forward to only one thing and that was travelling all the way from Borivali to Churchgate, to meet our family friends  - the Sampats. The hustle and bustle of the crowd on the station mounted our excitement. We used to wait on the platform and look around at the typical railway station activities while waiting for our dad to get the tickets. I remember very well, that once during one such wait, we were almost caught by the ticket collector and taken into his office when our dad just arrived with the tickets. We all gave a sigh of  relief. So, mounting a train and getting a seat on it needs a lot of dexterity  and patience at the same time. On getting  the desired window seats, we, kids used to feel on top of the world. Stations would pass by one after the other and soon enough we would reach the station full of the fragr...
